Description:Please join the Iranian Engineers of BC Association (IEBCA) in an informative in-person presentation by Dr. Hamid Reza Khoshnoud, P.Eng. from HIDA Structural Co. This is an in-person event, and the presentation is in English. Registration is required for attending the event. Mass timber is an innovative technology made by gluing together small pieces of lumber and wood flakes to form larger, stronger beams, columns, and panels. Buildings made by mass timbers are earthquake resistant, fire resistant, thermally insulated, eco-friendly and can be rapidly installed. Canada, being the world’s second largest exporter of wood products, is a world global leader in building with wood, with BC being the largest exporter of softwood lumber in the country. In this presentation, we will briefly review conventional light frame construction for single and multi-family buildings, and then consider mass timber technology including its definition, strength, fire resistance, durability, and ability to absorb and mitigate carbon dioxide. Additionally, the state of mass timber in Canada and in BC will be discussed. We will also review some examples of tall mass timber buildings in the world, Canada and BC. Lastly, we will cover the definition and design algorithm for Glulam beams, columns, Cross Laminated Timber (CLT), Glue Laminated Timber (GLT) and Nail-Laminated Timber (NLT) panels.
